In 1999 I made of series of monotypes as the daffodils at the studio began to bloom. The day was grey. The prints are striking, yellow blossoms with spring green touches, almost shocking on an almost solid black background. Dafodils are tough, wintering in their bulb and springing out at the first of spring, following bluebells, grape hyacinths, and crocuses. Responding to the shock of the bright yellow appearing in the plant bed around the studio became a rite of spring. The drypoint Osterglocken/ June 4th pictured above was made during a cold spring. The plate was proofed later, June 4 the anniversary of Tiananmen Square, and the penumbraic printing reflects the history of the day. The prints of this subject matter have taken different forms. A monotype series, Easter , sparked by the printing of these drypoints can be seen at www.ccvess.com.
